Situated along the Connecticut River and just 8 miles from Long Island Sound in southern Connecticut, the Riverwind Inn Bed & Breakfast is located in one of the most scenic areas of the state.  Ocean beaches, hiking trails, kayaking and nature are right at hand, yet New York City and Boston are only 2 hours away (and I-95 is within a few minutes drive for easy access).

The Riverwind Inn Bed & Breakfast is located in quaint Deep River, nestled between Essex and Chester in the heart of the Connecticut River Valley. The original Federal Style house was built in 1854, with a seamless addition built in 1987. It has been operating as an inn since 1985.

Initially a shipbuilding and quarrying town, Deep River became known because of the ivory trade. The growth of the piano industry led to a new use for this exotic and long-treasured substance and linked the area to Zanzibar.

The site of Deep River’s shipbuilding industry and the spot where ivory arrived in town, Deep River Landing is now a beautiful river park and the home of the Becky Thatcher Riverboat. Across from the landing, The Lace Factory, now a unique wedding venue was once a shipyard and docking facility. The Piano Works on Main Street, now a condominium complex, was once a factory that produced piano keys. The town’s deep connection with its past manifests in historic homes, buildings and a variety of attractions.

From 1840 to around 1940, the U.S. was the world’s largest buyer of ivory and most of that ivory went to Deep River. Deep River became “the queen of the valley” due to the wealth amassed from the ivory industry. A plaque and statue of an elephant outside Town Hall on Main Street acknowledges the role that the ivory trade played in the history of the region.

The inn is a ten-minute walk from the Connecticut River waterfront, with easy access for kayaking and sailing. Deep River is a charming, walkable town with restaurants, a pharmacy, a liquor store, a post office and a grocery store. Neighboring towns feature great restaurants, wineries, unique shops, galleries and farmers markets. Cultural attractions include the Goodspeed Opera House, the Katherine Hepburn Theatre, the Ivoryton Playhouse and the Florence Griswold Museum – all within 15 minutes of the inn.  It is truly a idealic location to run a lovely B&B and in a town that says, “I want to live here!”
